Long Review: | The latest addition to the WAB series covers the rise and wars of Alexander the Great. The book is laid out in the typical WH fashion, with an introduction, some special rules and a few pages of historical fluff. There are also pages of scenarios and a usually a page or so per army of hints on how to collect the army as well as some hints on painting that army. There is also a section containing a beautiful selection of colour pictures showing possible colour schemes, and a section with hints on running campaigns. The book includes a list for the Rise of Macedon 359-331 BC, an Alexandrian Imperial list 331-323 BC, a Greek Mercenary list 404-301 BC, a Thracian list, an Illyrian list, an End of Persia list 401-330 BC, a Frontier Horseman list, a Generic Indian list, a Classical Indian list, a Mountain Indian list, a Republican Indian list and one for the Mauryan Empire. Jeff Jonas really shows his knowledge of and interest in the period. The book, although the most expensive of the supplements to date, is worth every penny of the price. Even though I have very little interest in the period, I found the book to be fascinating and inspiring reading, and I believe that anyone reading the book will find it to have similar qualities. I'm certain it will lead to many more Alexandrian period armies seeing the table-top. I cannot wait to see the promised book on the Successors.
Period: Ancients up to about 1485AD. Scale: 28mm, but can be used for 15mm with modifications. Basing: Single figures. Contents: Perfect-bound A4 book. |
